How many of you remember watching the cartoon Popeye The Sailor Man? To this day, Popeye, the lovable sailor and his girlfriend, Olive Oyl, are two of my favorite cartoon characters. As a child, I could barely contain my excitement every time Popeye came to Olive Oyl’s rescue with the aid of his secret weapon, a big can of spinach, which made his biceps grow and gave him super-human strength.

But, that was fiction…Right?

Well, a team of scientists from Rutgers University in New Jersey have recently discovered that Popeye was right: Spinach does make you stronger by helping you build lean muscle mass, but only if you eat about 1 kilo or 2.2 pounds of it a day.

Through a series of lab tissue studies done on animals the study showed that a plant steroid extracted from spinach increased muscle growth by as much as 20% and also increased the front limb strength of rats by 10% .

Even if you areĀ  not looking to bulk up incorporating spinach into your diet is a healthy move. Spinach is a powerhouse of nutrients and antioxidants that can help protect against various cancers such as cancer of the liver, lungs, prostate, colon and ovaries. Spinach is especially beneficial to pre-menopausal women because it is a rich source of Iron, Calcium and Folic Acid.
